Elected Officials

There are 32 women legislators in the California State Legislature (22 Democrats and 9 Republicans). There was a net loss of three seats for women legislators from the previous session (including SD 32 Senator Gloria Negrete McLeod who was elected to US House of Representatives). However, due to the combination of the SD 32 special election, AD 80 special election, redistricting and term limits, there was loss of two women Democratic representatives and a gain of one Republican in the shuffle.

    - Debra Bowen, Secretary of State, is the sixth woman to be elected to the Executive Branch of the California State government.
    - Kamala Harris, Attorney General, is the seventh woman to be elected to the Executive Branch of California’s State government.
    - Democrats Betty Yee and Republican Michelle Steel, serve on the Board of Equalization.

In 2014, both BOE members Betty Yee and Republican Michelle Steel along with 7 women legislators (5 Democrats and 2 Republicans) will be lost to term limits. We continue to work hard to reverse the decline of elected women in statewide offices.

For informational purposes, below is the current complete list of women elected officials, both Democrats and Republicans. For the list of all the women by year who served in statewide offices in California, click here, printable PDF.
